Chapter 1 MULTIRESOLUTION MODELING OF THREE - DIMENSIONAL SHAPES

چکیده
Manipulation of models of complex three-dimensional shapes is common in computer graphics and virtual reality, computer-aided-design, geographic information systems, medicine, etc. In this chapter, we deal with geometric models based on spatial decompositions, also known as geometric meshes. A mesh is an aggregate of a finite number of basic entities, called cells. When a mesh is used to describe the shape of an object, each cell represents a portion of the object. The resolution of a mesh is related to the density of its cells, and it is a fundamental parameter for the accuracy of the object representation. Accurate representations need high resolutions, and, thus, a high number of cells, which leads to high costs for managing the mesh. Three-dimensional models are either fully synthetic or obtained from sampling physical objects. In both cases, the models produced by modern tools for either 3D acquisition and reconstruction, or computer-aided shape design, become more and more accurate, with larger and larger sizes. Models at high resolution can provide very accurate object representations, but they can easily become too large to be effectively used in tasks such as rendering, recognition, classification, collision detection, and manipulation planning. This problem cannot be simply solved by using more powerful machines, since, while hardware and software technology improves, the resolution of geometric models that we are able to construct increases at an even faster rate. However, most applications tasks do not need a high resolution in each parts of an object, at all times. Thus, we can reduce memory and computational costs

Shape Modeling and Shape Analysis Based on Singularities
To analyze given object shapes, it is necessary rst to model the shapes and then to analyze the models. This paper proposes a method of modeling and analyzing two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) shapes based on singularities. First, a function is dened on an object. The object is then modeled by the distribution of the singularities of the function. Finally, the extracted singular p...

متن کاملShape-Similarity Comparison of 3D Models Using Alpha Shapes
As the number of in-house and public-domain 3D shape models increase, importance of shape-similarity based search and retrieval for 3D shapes models has increased rapidly. In this paper, we describe our preliminary findings in applying a multiresolution analysis technique to the task of shape similarity comparison of polygon soup models. We used the 3D alpha shapes algorithm to create a multire...
متن کاملA Novel Toolbox for Generating Realistic Biological Cell Geometries for Electromagnetic Microdosimetry
Researchers in bioelectromagnetics often require realistic tissue, cellular and sub-cellular geometry models for their simulations. However, biological shapes are often extremely irregular, while conventional geometrical modeling tools on the market cannot meet the demand for fast and efficient construction of irregular geometries. We have designed a free, user-friendly tool in MATLAB that comb...
متن کاملThe Augmented Multiresolution Reeb Graph Approach for Content-based Retrieval of 3d Shapes
This article presents a 3D shape matching method for 3D mesh models applied to content-based search in database of 3D objects. The approach is based on the multiresolution Reeb graph (MRG) proposed by Hilaga et al . MRG provides a rich representation of shapes able in particular to embed the object topology. In our framework, we consider 3D mesh models of various geometrical complexity, of diff...
